Wow! I really like this netbook. I had no problem following the instructions in the installation manual and battery charger for the first time. The rest of the process was simple because the operating system has brought me the steps. I absolutely believe this is the way to go if you need computing power on the move but not all the features of notebooks full. Its great for reading e-mail word processing alone and of course talk to your grandchildren built-in webcam. Screen for its size is very clear and I am considering buying a external DVD drive for him so I or my grandchildren to watch movies anywhere! I particularly liked the plug N play 'USB ports

When you need a little PC, but not a lot of PC

I've had the opportunity to try notebooks before and have been unhappy with the little screen, little keyboard, and "cheap" toy feel. However, when given the chance to review the eCafe, I jumped on it. I'm a Mac user, but sometimes need a PC for work. That's where this comes in really handy. 

The main reason I've needed a PC was so that I could do some remote work which required a PC. I'm happy to report that this netbook works great for that. Recently, a friend needed to use his printer at my house and we made it work most easily by using this PC. I've taken this PC to a couple of trade shows and it was all I needed. It is smaller and a little lighter than my 13" macbook and I was able to slip it into a little messenger bag. I have not tried to use it for heavy computing...just emails and web surfing. But, as an FYI, it doesn't meet the specs for online games such as World of Warcraft. 

I had a little trouble getting the battery in correctly, but after a couple of tries, it is now working fine. I think the blue design with the bamboo is cute and the keyboard is a little better than other netbooks that I've tried. The netbook is about 10.75 inches wide by 7.5 and the screen is about 8.75 by 5 inches which is 10" on the diagonal. I haven't tried this one out yet, but I've also found netbooks great to take as a computer to show a presentation on when you have to bring your own projector and laptop. 

I'm giving this 5 stars, because I think it is a good netbook. I'm not giving it 5 stars as a full powered computer. So for when you need a little PC, but not a lot of PC, the eCafe may be the machine for you.

Great netbook!

I must say I really like this Hercules eCafe Netbook. It works great and boots up very fast. 

Now this is my first interaction with a netbook. I mainly use a laptop and two desktop computers. Since the laptop is work issued, I only use it for work related items. When I am at home I have to use one of the two desktops for email, surfing, etc. Now I have been using the netbook. It is very convenient. I can now check email or Facebook from the comfort of my big easy chair in the living room. Something that I never thought about before, but now it is a requirement and I cannot believe I was not conducting my Internet time from the comfy chair in my living room. Sure its a simple convenience, but I am a simple guy. 

There were a few things I had to get used to, like the keyboard. It is slightly smaller than the keyboard on my laptop, but then again its not a laptop, its a netbook. The screen is also wider and shorter. Which was an issue at first because my Mozilla top bar was taking up a lot of room, so I customized the top bar and now there is plenty of room on the screen. 

I have used the netbook on two recent business trips. It worked flawlessly. The hotels had wireless access and the netbook quickly connected after only a few quick keystrokes. Very simple, very fast. The three USB slots are very nice, plus there are two on one side and the third is on the other side, which is a nice feature. I also like the SD card reader. That will be a huge benefit when we go on vacation. We take lots of digital pictures so it will be nice to download them to the netbook each day and then email them to family and friends as the vacation progresses. And with a 250GB hard drive, that will store a lot of pictures! 

So far there have only been two problems with the netbook. The second day we were using it the battery stopped working. I pulled the battery out and then reseated it and it worked fine ever since. The second problem was with the "up" arrow key. I had to push it much harder than the other keys in order for it to work properly. That lasted about a week. I fixed that by depressing the key about a hundred times or so, and its been working fine ever since. 

ps: my wife loves this netbook too. But she has one issue with it. When the netbook is in its "sleep" state, the power button flashes. While that does not seem like a big deal, it is kind of bright in a darkened room. It would be nice if there was an option to turn off that flashing button. We have left it in a sleep state for many hours and the flashing button does not seem to draw much battery power, so other than a slight inconvenience when we are watching TV at night and we left the netbook on the coffee table, it really is not a big deal.

Highly portable and user-friendly; only limited by its size

I have been especially pleased with the ecafe and its portability and user-friendliness. The weaknesses of the ecafe are apparent based on its size. For a notebook computer that is light, as small as a daytimer and provides easy access to the internet and word processing, this is an excellent product. The keyboard requires minimal adjustment from a regular sized keyboard. Users will adapt easily and find that typing and moving around is no problem. I found myself leaning closer to see the screen better, but that comes with the size and you know this going into it. The screen displays pictures and videos very well. The battery seems to last the advertised 6 hours. Another positive is that it powers up and gets going quickly. The strongest point for me is the lightness and ease of use in meetings and other venues outside the office. It is very comfortable to use on the lap and is inconspicuous to others who may be distracted. 

I have found that the openoffice applications are adequate and my MSWord documents translate without problems so far. The webcam seems to work fine, too. 

There is no dvd/cd drive, so buyers need to know that when considering the purchase. 

If you are aware of the specs and the limitations of this machine and those are acceptable to you, I think you will be happy with what it offers and provides.

Small, speedy, good value - does quite a bit!

I've been using this little gadget for a few days now, and it takes some getting used to. I love full sized keyboards - on my laptop and desktop, so it takes some getting used to this smaller version (although not nearly as small as the keypad for my PDA!) 

It's my first netbook (I've had several laptops and many desktops), and I'll use it primarily for email when I'm on the road, and to store photos. I'll shoot 20-50 gig on a weekend, and storing them on an external device is the way to go. Carrying my huge in the field laptop is a pain - this thing is 1/4 the size. 

Since I'm used to installing software from CD's, needing to install everything via download, over my network, or from a USB key takes some getting used to. I've installed a few programs, and will try installing my Canon camera software this weekend. A USB key is a must-have accessory. 

If this review seems a little disjointed, that's because I'm writing it over a couple of days, adding and editing as I use the netbook.... 

Connections: Wired and wireless. I've used the wired connection so far. 

Webcam: so small I missed it at first. Simple to use, average quality. 

Screen: Bright, glossy. Plastic (I've seen it referred to as glass elsewhere.) Top heavy. When the screen is titled back a little too far, the netbook will topple over backwards. No damage done (unless you're on the edge of a table!) - just annoying. 

Build: Closes tightly, no lock/latch needed, speakers are very small, barely sufficient, but there is a headphone jack (still sounds tinny - I'd rate the sound quality 6 out of 10.) Playing with the graphic equalizer in Windows media player helps. Base seems a little flimsy (after all it is plastic), but it's well made. There's no simple way to take anything apart, so it's obviously not designed for upgrades (adding more memory for example.) 

I installed Skype - makes for a handy phone with the built in mic and webcam. Also watched some AVI video's (from 750K to 1.5 gig) - played with no problems 

Adobe LightRoom installed just fine and is really peppy - I'm surprised how fast it works. Can't wait to use it on 1200 RAW files and see what it does. I'm not going to try and install PhotoShop - the 1 gig of ram is a little anemic for that. 

Hopefully this will be my ideal "photographers companion" - store my photos, do some on-site editing, let customers/clients preview images, then return home and move them to my more robust desktop for some serious editing. 

So far I'm pretty impressed.

Great netbook with a cool list of differentiating features

Netbooks are compromises-they don't have optical drives and they have small keyboards. Since all netbooks suffer from these problems, I will leave them and Windows 7 out of this review. 

That leaves the features that make this netbook different. I've listed them in my priority order, favorites first. 

1. Fantastic battery life. I got 5 hours on my first charge, more than enough for most plane trips. The cool thing about netbooks is that they fit on tray tables in coach even if the person in front of you is leaning back. With a standard laptop, you usually have to tilt the lid down when they lean back. 
2. 250 GB Hard disk! Nuff said. 
3. Fast processor, for a netbook. This uses the fastest intel Atom processor, so it's faster than any netbook manufactured more than 3 months ago or so. 
4. Webcam and microphone built in. Also includes nice webcam management software. Works great with Skype. 
5. SD slot built in. Coupled with the 250GB disk, this netbook becomes the ideal travelling companion for a photographer. I'm not sure how many netbooks have SD slots, but I'm glad this one does. 
6. Included email program works well with multiple email accounts. This is a nice touch for a machine whose primary purpose is surfing the web and email. 
7. OpenOffice comes pre-loaded. This is a blessing and a curse. The good news is, OpenOffice will satisfy the vast majority of your Microsoft Office needs. The other good news is, it is preloaded, because loading commercial software like Microsoft Office onto a netbook is hard without a DVD drive. The curse is, when I tried to show a client a powerpoint presentation using OpenOffice, it crashed. I'm not deducting a star from this review, because it's an OpenOffice bug, not a netbook bug. 

I'm happy with this netbook. It's nicely made, and wll lighten my load on a trip. Any criticism I have is equally true of any netbook, so I won't waste time discussing it here other than to recommend that you don't get a netbook if you need to load a lot of software from CD/DVD. Five stars for a product from a company I didn't know about until it arrived.
