Long before I started my career here at IGN, I distinctly remember sitting with my friend and fiercely debating the pros and cons of buying the original Kingdom Hearts (we were not made of money, after all). On the one hand, the game cute Final Fantasy cameos and awesome character designs. But on the other hand, it had all these Disney characters I have no interest in. We finally decided that the purchase was a wise decision after discovering that Tinker Bell was a summoning spell. How could we go wrong with gnome power? 

Nearly ten years later, I'm here reviewing the latest in Square Enix's stunning series: Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, a PSP-exclusive prequel that illuminates some plot points up to the original Kingdom Hearts. I am always very eager to try my hand at the Kingdom Hearts game because I have a personal connection to history, but I'm also the first to point out the game's persistent problems. While the birth of sleep does not continue to suffer from some of the issues that have plagued it since the original, the latest in the series also boasts one of the best Kingdom Hearts game systems to date, and is easily the most ambitious in its design.

Let's start with the basics for all you newbies out there. Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG that combines Final Fantasy-style aesthetics with recognizable Disney worlds. The birth of Sleep is set before the events of the original Kingdom Hearts, so while you do not necessarily need to know what happened in the other games, your experience will be infinitely richer if you do. 

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep follows three separate stories. In the beginning you can choose players from three different characters: Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. These three keyblade practitioners (and close friends) have the task of defeating the recent uprising of creatures known as Unversed. Along the way, they encounter some familiar faces and some new threats. 

These play sessions are on separate save files so when the story begins, you will not be jumping between them while playing. You can choose to start a game and then quit out to another campaign, but I found it very satisfying to play a character's story from beginning to end. And as you might expect, you will be rewarded for completing all three campaigns (the game keeps track of completed save files to free up some delicious secrets). 

Like the original Kingdom Hearts game that raises your hero in the birth of Sleep from world to world solve minor problems and work towards a final goal. While on a world that players move through environments, collecting treasure and make a small amount of exploring. The real draw, however, is the battle system, as enemies materialize around player as he or she explores. 

The battles in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is awesome. Players can find, buy or earn special commands that can be adjusted from the main menu. These commands can be selected with the d-pad during battle and executed with triangle button. When a command is executed, the deck automatically cycle to the next command and the previous command into a cooling down period. 

This system keeps the action fast and user friendly, but also lets players customize their abilities at will. Commands can also be geared up and fused together to form new, so there is a mind-numbing amount of tweaking players have at hand. 

But commands are only one element in the formula. As you build up combos, a meter fills up the side of the screen. If you use special commands to build up the meter, your character enter a special "command style" which gives them a temporary but tremendous boost in capabilities. If, for example, Ventus was to throw a few lightning spells by completing command meters, he would enter the Thunderbolt command style and his movements would be electrically charged. 

If it was not enough depth to you each hero also has access to attack called Shotlocks which is designed to help deal with large groups of enemies. These attacks take some skill to use effectively, but the results are devastating. 

But that's not all! Each hero also forges Dimension Links, or D-Link, with characters they meet as they travel. By activating a D-Link, temporarily your hero wins abilities this character. More commands means more variety when it comes to fighting, and it is a good thing.

This struggle is not only deep, but it also requires skill. This is one of those rare occasions where I had actually encourage players to tackle the game on Proud severity (one step above normal). Here you must dodge constantly, studying the enemy's attack patterns, counts and even use commands like Stop and Poison to the fundamental best opponents. The experience is much more comfortable this way. 

One of the complaints in previous Kingdom Hearts game was that the mini-games included just was not fun. Fortunately, most of the mini-games in the birth of Sleep is not only fun but is also tied in perfectly with the main story (Except Rumble Racing. This mini-game does not control well). There is a full board available where your commands are used as playing pieces and these pieces level up when in use. So while you relax and take a break from saving the universe, you are still developing your character in the process. 

There is also a surprisingly robust multiplayer component for the birth of sleep that goes into a separate world, Mirage Arena. Here, players compete against each other or fight specific arena battles that feature multiple waves of enemies. They can even play Command Board mini-games together. Although there are certainly some framerate issues during arena matches to play with two people is smooth enough and it's fun to tackle the boss fights alacrity. There are even special commands intended for multiplayer use, this is a great touch. 

But one of the most impressive parts of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is the fact that there are three stories being told. Although there are bound to be some tiredness in seeing the same worlds several times, but Square Enix a respectable job in the varying challenges each hero faces on those similar worlds. These simultaneous reasons also encourage players to beat the game several times. 

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is not without problems. Like its predecessors, are the environments painfully bare and have very little life on them. This stands in direct contradiction with the otherwise conspicuous character models and particle effects that never ceases to impress. It would have been nice to see the same care given to worlds even as they continue to feel static and hollow. 

The stories in these worlds are also imperfect, because some of them lack the same punch as the overarching plotline of keyblade practitioners and Unversed. This is obviously due to the fact that the heroes spend as little time in each world, so there is not much room for character development, but it's still a shame that there are some dull spots on an otherwise exciting story. 

But the most problematic issues in Birth by Sleep is the camera / lock-on system. The triggers work well most of the time to keep things under control, but the cramped conditions the camera can freak out and it's hard to keep track of the action. Also frustrating is when the game decides to lock onto a nearby pot instead Unversed that are pummeling your face. I will never understand why there was a better priority system to keep that from happening. 

Do not let these issues discourage you from trying Birth by Sleep - this is a seriously fun adventure. There is plenty to do and the battle system is top notch. The developers even included options for changing the color depth and CPU speed of your game, giving you control over how smooth it runs.
