What Comprises an ID Badge Printer System?
The project has now become yours. The organization has approved an ID badge printer system for your business operations. Important decisions are needed to ensure the right printer system is obtained for your organization. By looking at the specific output that your badges need to provide, it is easy to narrow down the numerous options in today's marketplace to a manageable number of systems for your review.
Prepackaged systems are available are it is typical for a small company to start looking at a complete system rather than a customized system typically put together for businesses and organizations with a typical needs. It is wise to understand the components of either a turn key system or a customized system so that the purchase is smooth and the production process provides cards that meet organizational requirements.
The Printer- The key component of the system is the correct printer that will print the plastic cards. There are a number of manufacturers who produce a range of quality printers. Basic ID card printing is available with entry level printers. These printers are small and reasonable in price. Many companies find that this entry level printer will meet all of their needs. It is important not to over purchase, but you do want to ensure that your printer comes with all of the options that you need today and in the future. Printers with high level security printing output are available. Although more costly, the printer with security options may be a requirement for some situations.
Software- ID badge software is sometimes the most difficult component in the printer package. There are many options and features with various manufacturers. Basic software may not allow a database of records or it may not allow export and import features needed. Current and future needs of the organization will direct the version of software that will accommodate the initial printing of badges plus the future needs of badge changes and reporting requirements.
Camera- The majority of ID cards display a picture of the card holder. There are wide variations in the quality of these pictures. From the local warehouse membership card to the driver's license, the quality of picture can vary based on the requirements of the card issuer. A good digital camera from your integrator or a nearby camera shop may work perfect for your needs. Some web cameras will work for others.
Cards and Consumables – Most ID cards are printed on standard 30 mil PVC cards. A specialized card may be needed for door access or for cards that are exposed to rough conditions on a routine basis.
It is recommended to always purchase print ribbons that correspond to the specific printer model that is producing the ID cards. Various off brand or other manufacturer brand ribbons usually will not work or will not produce the quality output required.
Badge holders may be needed if card holders will be wearing their badges. Many options are available to secure and display badges while on the job. If badges will be worn, it is possible that a slot punch will be needed. These are handy tools that make a professional badge hold in the plastic card without cracking the plastic.
